Sylvia Sass / Salome, 1990.

I took these pictures of the legendary Hungarian soprano in 1990, as she rehearsed the final scene from Richard Strauss’s Salome, highlight of an all-star AIDS benefit that had brought her to L.A. for the very first time.  Spent a week with Sylvia, who was a quiet and thoughtful person, quite the opposite of her stage persona.  Photos are the work of a star-struck amateur.
